What We Know About Local Websites
In July and August 2026 we surveyed the websites of 88 independent businesses within roughly eight miles of Newcastle-under-Lyme, taking in parts of Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding villages. It was a technical check, not a design opinion: does the website load, is it secure, does it work on a phone, and can a search engine or an AI assistant make sense of it.
The results were more encouraging than the usual story about small business websites:
- 68 of the 72 websites that loaded took full marks for working on a phone, and 65 for being served securely.
- 65 of the 88 businesses dropped at least one point somewhere, most often on things that are invisible from the front.
- 40 of the 72 scored zero on the on-page basics that tell search engines what a page is about: the page title, the main heading, the meta description and the canonical tag (the line saying which address is the main copy of a page).
- 16 of the 88 web addresses did not serve a working website at all, usually because a domain renewal had not gone through.
Almost none of these were bad websites. They were good businesses whose websites were underselling them in ways the owner would have no reason to notice. The full write-up and the anonymised data are in I surveyed 88 local businesses.
What this means for you. If your business is in the area, the odds are that your website works well for visitors and that the things holding it back are a handful of settings rather than a rebuild. That is usually the cheapest kind of fix there is.
